Earl William Lane, known to all as "Bill," passed away the evening of June 24 at Wesley Glen Health Center after a difficult two-month struggle to overcome injuries and pneumonia resulting from a fall. Bill was born in Barlow, Ohio, in 1923, one of eight children, and was raised there by his eldest brother and sister after his mother died. At age 18, Bill's talent for math and science won him a scholarship to Ohio University, but Pearl Harbor interrupted his studies. During WWII, Bill served as an electrician on board the USS Gustafson, a destroyer escort that hunted German submarines in the Atlantic. After the war, Bill attended Ohio State University and married Joan McDill, whom he met there. In 1949, he graduated from Ohio State's College of Education with a major in math and minors in physical science and industrial arts. After Bill and Joan taught in Chillicothe for a few years, Bill was hired to teach math and physics at Worthington High School. In 1956, Bill became high school principal, and was promoted in 1966 to assistant superintendent, a position in which he developed and supervised the secondary curriculum, hired all secondary teaching and administrative staff, and supervised extracurricular activities and athletics. After retiring in 1981, Bill served for many years as executive director of Employment for Seniors, a nonprofit placement agency. He and Joan continued their busy social life as well as their service as parishioners of St. John's Episcopal Church in Worthington. Bill is survived by his wife of 59 years, Joan McDill Lane; his daughter, Jennifer Lane Maier; son-in-law, Robert Maier; and his beloved grandchildren, Jessie and William Maier. A memorial service will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church in Worthington on Tuesday, July 1, at 2:30 p.m., and friends are invited to attend the reception in the parish hall immediately after the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Bill's memory to St. John's Episcopal Church in Worthington, or in support of intercultural programs at AFS-USA. Checks should be mailed to the AFS-USA Office of Development, One Whitehall Street, 2nd Fl., New York, NY 10004. Please include a note stating that your gift is in memory of Earl William Lane.
