Remembering Earl Lane

by Carl Wick

Mr. Lane was one of my favorite high school teachers.  Prior to his replacing Glenn Williams as the HS principal, Bill taught math & physics.  I had him for advanced algebra, physics, trigonometry & solid geometry.  He was a great teacher in that he could effectively explain concepts & principles.  I pursued math & science at Ohio State & then taught high school science for three years & finally used my science background for a rewarding career in the computer field at NCR for 30 years.  Duane Pelkey (WHS 57) and I worked at the swimming pool in the men’s checkout/dressing room the summer of 1955.  We were playing summer baseball, so sometimes before work we'd meet at the HS baseball field and hit and throw to one other.  Occasionally Bill, who was the pool manager with Coach Dow Nelson, joined us.  When Mr. Lane first threw to us we couldn't believe his speed.  We did not know him as an athlete as he was not coaching at Worthington & never seemed to talk about sports.  It turned out that Bill had been an outstanding baseball player having been a semi-pro pitcher getting paid a few dollars to pitch for a semi-pro baseball team near Chillicothe.
